My first (and last?) bone

I had a real treat last night – a great big pork bone – and I really enjoyed having a chew of it…

My first bone, yummy

Unfortunately, I was well and truly sick this morning, so I think that may also be my last bone 😦

@heatheralex threw the remains (and there was a lot I had left to chew!) in the bin. So now we are wondering, are these cooked bones in the dog treats section of the supermarket generally ok for us dogs??

  1. Poor thing! Maybe you need a smaller bone? Bella (you remember her – the mad chocolate Labrador) loves bones and is never sick, even though Labs are meant to have sensitive digestive systems.

  2. Cooked bones can splinter which is a reason not to give them, but I supervise and collect the splinters and have so far avoided an accident. I only give cooked bones about once a year though.

    1. We sorta knew that, but were fooled into thinking it might be ok by the fact it was sold in a dog treat section. I think – if I do get another bone – it will be a raw one from the butcher!

  3. I had my very first raw bone from the butcher’s after I’d been for my girly ‘op’ at 6 months. It was good, but maybe a bit big for me. BOL it was pretty ginormous, like half a cows leg. I also got very guardy and it made me a bit anxious having to hide it all the time. I’d put it under cushions and try to bury it by covering it with blankets and stuff. I still get anxious if I get chewy things that are too big for me to eat in one go.. I worry about leaving them lying around in case someone steals them. Chicken wings are my favourite.. nice small bones complete with meat on… very nommy.

  4. I never did ear of cooked bones makin dogs pawly before my pal but mebbe is cos you is small and has delicate stomach. I fink mebbe Teagen is right and raw bones is best.
